Ingredients 

Pretzel Dough

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg yolk beaten with 1 tablespoon water
  • to taste coarse salt

Instructions 

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Add sugar and salt, and stir until dissolved. Add flour and knead until smooth and elastic.
  2. Let the dough rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  3. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). In a large pot, bring water and baking soda to a boil.
  4. Divide the dough into 8 pieces. Roll each piece into a rope and shape into a pretzel.
  5. Dip each pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg yolk mixture and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
