Ingredients 

Main Ingredients

  • 4 large onions thinly sliced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup dry white wine
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 8 slices French baguette
  • 1 ½ cups grated Gruyère cheese

Instructions 

  1. Heat butter and olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add onions, sugar, and salt. Cook until onions are golden brown, about 25 minutes.
  3. Stir in flour and cook for another 2 minutes.
  4. Add wine, broth, thyme, and bay leaf. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top with baguette slices, and sprinkle with Gruyère cheese.
  7. Bake in preheated oven until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 10 minutes.
