French Onion Soup Recipe
Classic French Onion Soup with caramelized onions, beef broth, and melted Gruyère cheese.

- 4 large onions thinly sliced
- 4 cups beef broth
- ¼ cup butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup dry white wine
- 1 tablespoon flour
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- 8 slices French baguette
- 1 ½ cups grated Gruyère cheese
Heat butter and olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
Add onions, sugar, and salt. Cook until onions are golden brown, about 25 minutes.
Stir in flour and cook for another 2 minutes.
Add wine, broth, thyme, and bay leaf. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top with baguette slices, and sprinkle with Gruyère cheese.
Bake in preheated oven until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 10 minutes.
