UglyFood Recipes: Dried Fruits

Besides freezing fruits and making acai bowls and fruit smoothies, another way to prevent your beloved but excess fruits from going into the trash bin is to make them into dried fruits. Gone are the days when you have to brave Singapore's sweltering heat or heavy thunderstorms just to make a trip to and from your nearest supermarket or mom-and-pop shop to buy a packet of dried fruits. Now, you can make dried fruits in the comfort of your home without going anywhere, so long as you have dried fruits and a dehydrator or an oven!


How to make dried fruits?

Yield: As many people as you want to serve

Preparation time; 10 minutes (depending on the number of fruits that you have selected)

Dehydration time: 1 hour - 36 hours (depending on the type of fruits that you have chosen)

Ingredients: Up to your decision

Equipment: Dehydrator or oven


First, you need to prepare your fruits before drying them. Rinse them under running water, and remove any seeds, pits and stems. Cut them into smaller slices, just the way you like it! If you choose to dry small fruits such as grapes, blueberries and blackberries, you do not have to cut them into pieces.

Next, place the fruits on dehydrating trays. Dehydrate them for 8 to 16 hours, depending on the fruit type. 

If you do not have a dehydrator, you can use an oven instead. Put the sliced fruits in a single layer on non-stick baking sheets in trays, then place them in an oven at 77 degrees Celsius. Keep the oven door open slightly. Check the trays every 2 to 3 hours, and rotate the trays if necessary. 

Then, leave them to cool. Properly dried fruits should be chewy, not squishy or crispy.
